Reviews of Toward a Psychology of Awakening
Buddhism, Psychotherapy and the Path of Personal and Spiritual Transformation

In his personable and eminently compassionate writing, Welwood explores the intersection of psychological work and meditative practice. Marvelously fluent.

NAPRA Review

*****

This is a very important book. I cannot recommend it too highly.

Middle Way

*****

John Welwood is pre-eminent in the development of 'east-west psychology', and in Toward a Psychology of Awakening he asks how it is possible to integrate the personal and interpersonal sides of our nature, which psychotherapies treat, with the supra-personal aspects, which the spiritual traditions address. The answers that Welwood develops are genuinely new, and his book should be read by all those who venture on the spiritual path. as well as by those who claim to offer guidance on the path. His writing is intimate, human and detailed, and all the more revealing for that.

*****

For thirty years John Welwood has been a pioneer in integrating the spiritual insights of Eastern religion with the insighs from the therapeutic psychology of the West. Welwood practices an ancient art, which appears out of favor in our modern world. Instead of studying isolated fragments of human experience, he seeks to integrate, to unify, to see the whole. A deep acquaintance with both the practice of Buddhist meditation and a comprehensive study of the Buddhist tradition is combined with insights from his own work as a psychotherapist and his understanding of Western psychology.

*****

John Welwood tackles some major issues in this book and in doing so raises many interesting questions and generates new and exciting ideas. This book is sure to speak to the hearts and minds of psychologists and wisdom seekers alike.
